Why Picking a Fight With Canada Is Terrible Politics In America
If you wanted to design a culture‑war villain who would alienate the middle of the American electorate, you wouldn’t pick “Canada.”
Americans don’t just like Canada—they adore it. Gallup’s 2025 World Affairs survey found 89% of Americans hold a favorable view of Canada (38% very favorable, 51% mostly favorable) and just 10% are unfavorable. That’s a +79 net favorability for Canada—the top tier of any country in the poll.
And that love of Canada is CRUSHING Trump’s approval ratings.
Now stack that up against the man driving the latest cross‑border feud. Gallup’s October 2025 read on President Donald Trump puts him at 41% approval / 54% disapproval, a –13 net job approval. In other national polling this year, the spread has often been even worse (e.g., AP‑NORC in mid‑summer: ~40/59, –19). No matter which mainstream series you choose, the gap between “Canada’s brand” and “Trump’s brand” in the U.S. public is not small—it’s a canyon. Using Gallup alone, that’s roughly a 92‑point difference (+79 for Canada vs. –13 for Trump). Using other contemporaneous series, the gap still easily clears 60 points. In other words, politically speaking, Canada isn’t just more popular than Trump—it’s in another universe.
In Canada, Trump’s numbers are brutal
North of the border, Trump’s standing is as cold as a February wind off the Prairies. A Léger national survey this spring reported 12% positive / 79% negative impressions of Trump in Canada — 67 net. A separate YouGov binational poll conducted the same winter found 22% favorable / 72% unfavorable — 50 net. Pew’s global work in June/July similarly shows Trump's confidence among Canadians languishing around 22%. Whichever reputable pollster you pick, Trump’s Canadian numbers are deeply underwater.
In other words, Canada F****** HATES Trump. With a vitriolic passion not seen, well, ever.
Meanwhile, Canadian opinion of the United States itself has slumped to modern lows amid tariffs and sovereignty talk: only about a third (34%) of Canadians now view the U.S. favorably—down 20 points in a year—while unfavorable views have surged by proxy of our extreme hatred of America’s Fascist Rapist Felon President. That’s not just a snub; it’s a structural headwind for any U.S. president who wants to posture against Ottawa.
Americans don’t want a fight with their favorite neighbor. And they are REALLY angry at Trump fr picing that fight with us because they LOVE us, as much as we love them. Maybe more, given their current situation. And we get it. We’re riding with you, America, and you seem to know that, which means we can do this together.
If you’re looking for the electoral logic of “bashing Canada,” you won’t find much in the crosstabs. When the Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos asked Americans about a grab‑bag of hardline proposals—including “taking over Canada”—only 13% expressed support. A majority believed Trump was serious about such ideas—and still rejected them. That’s not a culture war; that’s a political cul‑de‑sac.
And when AP‑NORC asks how Trump is handling major issues (immigration, trade, spending, the economy), he’s underwater on every one. The “tariff the neighbors / threaten annexation” theater may excite a slice of the base, but it’s mismatched with the broad, durable goodwill Americans have toward Canada.
The bottom line (and the math)
Americans’ view of Canada (2025 Gallup): 89% favorable, 10% unfavorable → +79 net.
Americans’ view of Trump (Oct. 2025 Gallup): 41% approve, 54% disapprove → –13 net. Gap with Canada: ~92 points.
Canadians’ view of Trump (2025 Léger / YouGov): –50 to –67 net (range across reputable polls).

So yes—“Canada is more popular than Trump in Canada.” More to the point, Canada is vastly more popular than Trump in the United States, where the next election will actually be decided. That’s not just an indictment; it’s a warning, the kind you write in bold on a campaign whiteboard: picking a fight with America’s favorite neighbor is a self‑own. Or, to borrow the blunt phrasing: he “fucked with the wrong country.” The numbers say so. The best part? 270 million Americans agree.
What this means strategically
You can’t bully the neighbor everyone likes. Attacking Canada contradicts the pro‑ally instincts of most Americans and invites needless backlash among persuadables who otherwise might be movable on economic or security issues. Gallup.com
It doesn’t fix Trump’s core problem. His approval has been range‑bound around ~40% all year. There’s no evidence that Canada‑bashing produces durable gains; if anything, it highlights a governing style the broader public already dislikes.
Canadian public opinion is not a bluff. With Canadians’ confidence in U.S. leadership collapsing and Trump personally toxic there, Ottawa has every incentive to stand firm—politically and economically—which makes escalation look both petty and ineffective.
A quick note on the “–58 in Canada” claim
You’ll see different snapshots depending on question wording (favorability vs. confidence vs. job approval) and field dates. In 2025, high‑quality polls put Trump’s net standing in Canada between –50 and –67. A “–58” read is squarely in that band; the precise number varies by pollster and week, but the direction (and magnitude) are not in doubt. Americans love Canada and every time Trump shit talks the great white north, he turns the screws on himself.
Real Americans love Canada. Canada Loves a Trumpless America. Maybe it's time that Canada got a little more assertive. Maybe Carney’s Canada can do more to call out the human rights abuses and fascist heel turn at the hand of Trump.
Calling out Aligator Alcatraz and the ICE Goons terrorizing Americans is the next step for Canada/Carney. And it’s coming.
Why? Because Canada’s interest in saving America is America’s interests, and we have the STONES to do what the democratic party and other world leaders refuse to do.
Every day I give thanks that our northern neighbors haven’t (yet) condemned all Americans and are still willing to recognize that most of us still love Canada. (Go Jays!)
