My uncle had measles as a toddler, in the time before vaccines. He ended up with encephalitis, which impacted him physically (debilitating his dominant left hand) as well as to some degree intellectually. In addition, the encephalitis left him with lifelong epilepsy, mostly of the grand mal type.

Fast forward to his 70s. He was found unresponsive in his apartment in 2008. Upon hospitalization, doctors performed a CT scan of his head. They discovered that one hemisphere of his brain was GONE. The conclusion? Probably SSPE -- Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis -- a residual effect of his childhood encephalitis that eventually destroyed half his brain.

I tell this story to people with young children who are concerned/resistant to vaccinating their children. I tell them about the lifelong impacts this had on my uncle. I tell them that the theory that this specific vaccine "causes autism" is not only ridiculous but also has been thoroughly and repeatedly debunked.

All I can do is continue to tell his story. He died aged 72, the first of my dad's brothers to die. He died at least 7 or 8 years before his twin, and 13 years before my father, his oldest brother. I hope his story helps others understand how serious this "childhood illness" is.

Unbelievable. I thought the US had a corner on religious fruitcakes. Sorry that it's the kids who suffer from their parent's stupidity.
