I've been stocking up on non-perishable food since Trump started talking about tariffs last summer. I have also been making a more solid donation to the food bank each week. I believe when the bubble on the NYSE pops, and it's going to, all hell will break loose. All I say to anyone is prepare yourself because I don't think any of us have seen how bad it will get!
I sure am in Canada. i’m in NB. Just like the 1930's, Canada was not spared. When companies start declaring bankruptcy they will be bankrupt in Canada too!
It will hit Canada almost as hard as the States. A lot of our companies are American owned, and when they fail, it will hurt both. This is exactly why I have never been a fan of free trade between the two countries, it has left Canada much more vulnerable while destroying Canadian owned businesses. We used to have several Canadian owned department stores, Walmart wiped all of them out. Chapters wiped out Canadian book stores, and I could go on. Putting all our eggs in the one American basket is the dumbest thing Canada has ever done!
PM Carney is unhooking Canada's military from the U.S., if I understand correctly? It sounds like the next step will be creating completely independent businesses. How long do you think that would take? China and India would certainly like to do business with Canada because they 50% U.S. tariff is distasteful (to put it politely).
40 years of integration won't disappear overnight. It won't disappear in one 4 year term for Carney either. The de-integration of Canada with the US will take years.
Our military will take years to get to where it needs to be; governments of both parties have neglected the CAF for decades, and it needs a complete equipment overhaul. I served in the 80s and 90s, and we had no money back then. It's even worse today. I will say our troops have a lot of ingenuity, and they know how to stretch a dollar!
I don't believe Carney's goal is to replace trade with America by choosing other nations. The goal, as I understand it, is to expand our trade, so America no longer has a stranglehold on our economy. In doing so, we grow our GDP and we reduce our vulnerability to a rogue American leader hell bent on destroying us. The goal is to reduce our vulnerability to the States, and again, this will take more than 4 years to complete.
I made my last trip to the States in 1989. I realized back then what we were doing to our own economy. I have been trying hard to buy Canadian products most of my adult life due to free trade and how it has been abused. Everything that is happening today in the US with regards to businesses and State governments complaining about the loss in Canadian spending is exactly what I knew would happen. Canadians for 4 decades have helped build the greatest economy, at the expense of our own. In doing so, many Canadian businesses have failed, costing our economy jobs and putting greater stress on the country and provinces due to the loss of taxes.
As much as I despise Trump, he has done everything he can to show Canadians we were wrong to spend so freely in the US. We did this to ourselves, and now we are trying to right the ship. It won't be easy, it won't be fast, but if Carney does it correctly, we will be better for it, even with the initial pain.

I've been saying since he took office that he was purposely going to destroy the U.S. economy, the evidence is just now beginning to show results of his destruction. A glimpse into what perhaps it will look like, one only needs to look at how an average person lives inside an authoritarian run Country. And yes, it will affect Canada as well. We can only hope that our PM Carney is able to right the ship and keep us away from this U.S. catistrophic storm that's starting to show its outer rings.

He is determined to control every aspect of everyone's lives and thoughts. As his numerous mental and physical illnesses take him down, he will attempt to take all of us with him.
