The Power of American Shame: Greenland, Munich, and the Question of Trust

On this episode, I sat down with former Navy pilot, filmmaker, author, and Valour Media Network founder Ken Harbaugh to talk about what he saw and heard in Greenland and Denmark — and what it says about America’s standing in the world.

Ken had just returned from meetings with officials and citizens in both countries. The takeaway was direct: America’s allies are reassessing the United States in real time. They are not reacting to headlines. They are adjusting strategy.

  • Greenland and Denmark remain committed to NATO and transatlantic cooperation, but confidence in Washington’s long-term reliability has weakened. In the Arctic, where security competition is intensifying, uncertainty about U.S. consistency carries real consequences.

  • We discussed what Ken described as the “power of American shame” — the idea that accountability embraced by citizens, not imposed by adversaries, is essential to restoring credibility. In Copenhagen and Nuuk, he encountered leaders who still believe in democratic partnership with the United States. What they are waiting for is evidence that Americans will defend their own institutions and alliances.

  • The conversation then turned to the Munich Security Conference and the signal sent by Senator Marco Rubio. Ken argued that the tone and substance of recent U.S. messaging reinforced European concerns that American commitments may be conditional. In response, European leaders are accelerating discussions around strategic autonomy, defense independence, and diversified alliances.

We examined the strategic cost of eroding trust. Military power remains intact. Economic leverage remains significant. What is in question is predictability. Allies require clarity that treaty obligations and democratic principles are durable.

We closed on the central question shaping global diplomacy right now: When will the world be able to trust the United States again?

The answer will not come from speeches. It will come from sustained policy, institutional stability, and a reaffirmation of democratic norms at home.

Watch or listen to the full conversation with Ken Harbaugh on Substack and YouTube. This episode is a clear look at how America is being viewed abroad — and what it will take to repair that view.
