The FiveStack: When the Monster Turns - Inside the MAGA Extremist “Groyper” Link to the Charlie Kirk Assassination

Wajahat Ali, Zev Shalev and Dean break down how a Nick Fuentes–aligned splinter cell seemingly hunted Charlie Kirk—and what it means for America’s escalating right-wing civil war

September 12, 2025

The lede

A 22-year-old Utah man, Tyler James Robinson, is in custody for the assassination of Charlie Kirk during a Utah Valley University event on September 10. Officials say he acted alone; charges include aggravated murder and felony firearm discharge. Early case materials describe Discord messages, a recovered Mauser bolt-action rifle, and meme-coded inscriptions on spent casings. Authorities have not formally announced an ideology or motive. But open-source receipts compiled by journalists—most prominently Wajahat Ali’s coverage on The Left Hook—and the public record of the Groyper movement’s hostility toward Kirk point in a direction the right would rather ignore: intra-MAGA radicalization targeting its own leaders.

“We got him.” —Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, confirming the arrest, as Utah prosecutors weighed capital charges.

What’s confirmed (as of today, September 12, 2025)

  • Arrest & charges: Robinson, 22, is held without bail on aggravated murder and related counts after Kirk was shot from an elevated position while speaking at UVU.

  • Evidence highlights: Investigators cite Discord messages about obtaining/ditching a rifle; recovery of a Mauser; and inscribed shell casings with references to online subcultures. Officials currently believe he acted alone.

  • Caveat: No official ideology has been released; reporting remains provisional pending full charging documents.

What’s emerging: the Groyper thread

Reporting and live analysis by Wajahat Ali at The Left Hook argues the shooter aligns with the Nick Fuentes–orbiting “Groyper” faction that has long targeted Kirk and Turning Point USA as “Conservative Inc.” sellouts. That assessment connects years of receipts—Fuentes’ campaign to humiliate Kirk on campus, the 2019 UCLA Don Jr. debacle, and persistent, public Groyper hostility toward TPUSA—to this moment. Authorities haven’t certified the ideology, but the intra-right feud context is real and well-documented.

Explainer: What is a “Groyper”?

Short version: A loose, far-right, white-nationalist, Christian-nationalist network clustered around Nick Fuentes, known for entryism (pressuring mainstream conservatives to adopt openly ethnonationalist positions) and meme-driven radicalization of primarily young men. They heckled and disrupted TPUSA and allied figures—including Kirk and Donald Trump Jr.—during the 2019 “Groyper Wars.”

Why they hate Kirk: To Groypers, Kirk epitomizes Conservative Inc.”—insufficiently nativist on immigration, “too friendly” to Israel, and tolerant of LGBTQ conservatives. That feud went national when Don Jr. was booed off a UCLA stage by Fuentes’s followers after a Q&A was canceled.

The receipts (summarized)

  • Wajahat Ali’s coverage (The Left Hook) documenting the Groyper-vs-Kirk history, the faction’s escalating rhetoric, and why early signals point inward, not leftward.

  • Case evidence decoding: Analyses caution against over-reading the inscriptions on casings—many pull from gaming/online culture without a clean ideological fingerprint—yet note the ecosystem in which those memes circulate.

  • Public record: Years of mainstream coverage on Groypers’ tactics and their effort to drag the right further right via public confrontations with TPUSA/Kirk.

Claims vs. facts (keep this handy)

  • Claim: “A radical left terrorist killed Kirk.”
What we know: There’s no evidence for a leftist motive; investigators haven’t assigned ideology; the historic Groyper-vs-Kirk feud is well-established.

  • Claim: “The meme engravings prove X ideology.”
What we know: They reference mixed online cultures and do not alone establish motive; context matters.

  • Claim: “This was a coordinated cell.”
What we know: Officials currently say he acted alone; the probe is ongoing.

The bigger picture: MAGA hunted by the monsters it courted

This is the paradox of performative escalation politics. A hyper-radical splinter of the MAGA universe—Groypers among them—demands more violence, more purity, more punishments for migrants, Muslims, Black Americans, and LGBTQ communities. When establishment figures don’t deliver, the splinter turns its rage inward. That’s why Kirk has been a target for years—and why denial of this dynamic only deepens the risk.

Comparative cases that clarify the landscape:

  • Butler, PA (2024): The attempted assassination of Donald Trump by Thomas Matthew Crooks (Groyper) remains officially motive-unclear; online narratives tried to slot it neatly onto “the left,” but evidence never supported that. The broader lesson: instability thrives in radicalized ecosystems.

  • Minnesota lawmakers attack (June 2025): Vance Luther Boelter (Groyper) is charged in a targeted political spree against Democrats; early right-wing claims that he was a leftist collapsed under basic scrutiny. Misinformation filled the void.

From Waj’s world: How to fight the Groyper/Q pipeline

  • Starve the oxygen, keep the receipts. Don’t Give An Inch: Document, archive, timestamp. Don’t launder their frames; contextualize them. Call them out. Always.

  • Explain the memes. Create context cards for symbols/slogans to help audiences understand the lure of radicalization without being recruited. “Ciao Bella” and “If ur reading this ur gay” are MAGA/Groyper extremist calling cards.

What to watch next

  • Charging documents and any formal statement on ideology from Utah prosecutors.

  • Movement reaction: Do Fuentes/Groyper figures claim or disown Robinson? Do mainstream MAGA influencers acknowledge the long-running feud—or deflect?

Bottom line

If early indicators hold, Charlie Kirk wasn’t killed by the left. It looks more and more like he was targeted by a faction his movement cultivated, one that believes MAGA isn’t violent enough. That reckoning can’t be outsourced to scapegoats. It lives inside the movement’s own incentive structure—and it will keep producing tragedies until leaders name it, isolate it, and dismantle it.
