This was great—one small correction, though. To say “Temu Trump” is somewhat to misstate the case. Pollievre is to Trump as Yanukovych was to Putin—not a Canadian leader, not a wannabe American strongman, but a puppet who’d turn our country into a vassal state of the US. If I see/hear one more of these chickenhawk CPC mouthpieces spout some version of “Ukraine can’t win and has to cede territory,” I might never stop screaming “look at a map, morons” over and over and over until I stroke out or someone puts me in a padded room. Not the map that shows Ukraine and Russia on the other side of the Atlantic; the polar one that shows that our nearest geo-political neighbours are the United States and Russia. We’re in a corner: if we fail to meet this Trump-Putin alliance with our elbows up, we’ll repeatedly face the Hobson’s Choice of “sell us your resources on the cheap and bow to our dominance or cease to exist,” if anyone even bothers to dress it up as anything other than straight-up conquest. (If you think I’m overreacting, remember that in early 2015, as Russia was hardening its hold in Crimea, it also brought a spurious claim to expand its northern territorial waters some 200 km closer to Canada and Greenland). We must recognize that, in this moment, neither of our geopolitical neighbours are our friends. We must send our Yanukovych packing, embrace our own unlikely patriot leader, PM Carney, lock arms with the still-free world, and treat these imperialist motherfuckers as what they are—would-be colonizers here to ravish our land and subjugate our people, a prospect even more nightmarish for our First Nations, for whom I imagine the schadenfreude of it all would not lessen the calamity of a repeat. As Canadians, we cannot support, accept, or in any way stand for a “peace deal” that sees an inch of Ukraine surrendered to Russia or that appeases the Russian aggressor in any way: first, it’s unconscionable; second, if we allow such a “peace deal” to stand, we will have nowhere to go, no claim to make, no case to bring under international law, no hope of being masters in our own land—if we fail to uphold international law, to insist upon basic decency, and to respect the lessons of history by standing up for Ukraine, we will have no one to blame but ourselves when no one stands up for us.

Yes, Americans LOVE Canadians. This is an incredible podcast. It made me laugh, it made me cry, but it gives me HOPE that we will survive if we stick closely to our Canadians friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this podcast!
Such a profound conversation at a most significant time of keeping the values of freedom and individual rights within a governance framework of Democracy. Steve Schmidt is so clear-thinking about what is truly important, and he’s a very lovable American. Dean is our Canadian beacon of defining complex situations with intelligence, satire and wit! How about the blue states and any state that wants to live in a free democratic society just seceed from the union and join Canada. That would be quite a deterrent from Trump invading Canada because that would add 160 million to Canada's 40 million to make a nation of 200 million and would leave 180 left in the red states. I think Trump is too much of a coward to invade a country that has an equal size and perhaps slightly larger resources. He would very likely to invade with an 8 to 1 size advantage though. This is something to really seriously think about. America is no longer a democracy, so this could preserve democracy, which is the important thing. Also, a footnote is that nowhere in the US Constitution or any amendment is it unconstitutional for any state or group of states to seceed from the union. Nowhere to found. Check it out.
