Your no-nonsense briefing on the stories democracy lovers need to know today. Welcome to the Daily Dean, where we cut through the noise to bring you the truth about what’s happening in the fight for democracy.
Here are the top five stories you need to know today:
1. Trump Lifts Sanctions on Russian Banks: Lev Parnas dropped a bombshell on Substack, reporting that the Trump administration has lifted sanctions on several Russian banks, including Sberbank, VTB, and even the Central Bank, for civil nuclear projects. These banks are closely tied to Putin’s regime, raising alarms about Trump’s cozy relationship with Russia. Critics on X are calling it a betrayal of U.S. allies, with hashtags like #TrumpIsARussianAsset trending. Why now, and what does this mean for global security? Democracy lovers are watching closely as this unfolds.

2. Canada Demands Answers After Canadian Citizen’s Death in ICE Custody: The death of 49-year-old Johnny Noviello in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody has sparked outrage in Canada. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand revealed that 55 other Canadians are currently detained in ICE facilities, and Ottawa is scrambling to understand why. Described as “quiet, polite, and respectful” by his former lawyer, Noviello’s death has raised questions about the treatment of foreign nationals in U.S. detention. Canada is pushing for transparency, but will the U.S. comply? This is a human rights issue that democracy lovers can’t ignore.

3. Canada Shelves Digital Services Tax After Trump’s Tariff Threats: In a dramatic about-face, Canada scrapped its 3% digital services tax on U.S. tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta, just hours before it was set to take effect on June 30. The move came after Trump abruptly ended trade talks, citing the tax as a “direct and blatant attack” on the U.S. While Canadian officials initially dismissed Trump’s threats, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to shelve the tax is seen as a strategic play to resume trade negotiations and avoid crippling tariffs. Critics call it a weak move, but others argue it’s a pragmatic step toward a broader economic and security deal by July 21. Did Carney blink, or is this a calculated sacrifice for Canada’s long-term interests?

4. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” Nears Passage: A Blow to the 95%?Trump’s sweeping tax and spending legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” is expected to pass today with amendments. While it promises massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, analysts warn it could add $3.3 trillion to the U.S. debt and kick 10 million people off Medicaid. The bill’s Section 899, targeting countries like Canada with “unfair” taxes, was dropped after OECD negotiations, but the damage to everyday Americans could be severe. For democracy lovers, this bill raises red flags about prioritizing the top 5% over the rest. How much will the average American suffer if it passes?

Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not the President, senators, congressmen, and government officials, but the voters of this country.

This is the first I've read about the orange sadist lifting Russian sanctions. Also, the number of Canadians kidnapped by ICE is news to me. I often find information in your newsletter that I don't find elsewhere. Thanks!
The (poor) disguise is off. Trump is revealing that he has been a Russian asset for years and he is trying to boost Putin and destroy the US at the same time. Nice job by the Supreme Court, Corporate Media, the Republican Party and the morons of MAGA in making this all possible.
