While Trump throws tantrums for his tech billionaire donors, Carney sends the Ambassador and moves on to lead the free world. Welcome to Canadian sovereignty.
βBased on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately" Trump wrote on his Truth Social network. βWe will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period.β Such taxes have previously drawn scrutiny from Trump. He directed his administration in February to look for ways to counter digital services taxes, saying foreign officials βopenly admit [they] are designed to plunder American companies.β
βWe have 200 countries, you could say 200 countries plus, we canβt do that,β the president said of the work to strike deals.
The president accused Canada of βcopyingβ the European Union, which similarly imposed a tax on some of the biggest U.S. companies providing digital services, including Alphabet, Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft.
π€£π€£π€£ He canβt even use digital services ! If he did, he would know that there are only 195 countries, unless π€maybe he should be forced to show his papers - what planet could he be from ? π π€¦π»ββοΈ I wish that whatever one it is, would decide they want their idiot back. A pipe dream, I know, but we n ex some hope and relief here. π
I love Canada, and always did, always will. When I discovered that I am a Canadian citizen by heredity (mother born in Canada β it doesnβt get more certain than that) it was the happiest day of my life, so far. βSo far,β because I need to make room for happy days to come when I establish residency in our vast, beautiful, strong country.
So, until that day, and for 8 years before that, Iβve always dismissed him as an empty, orange headed idiot (my wife did, when he rode down the escalator, so sheβs even more genuine than me), but since January, heβs become a dangerous, empty, orange headed idiot. If he dares to inflict harm on Canada, Iβll have to get a waiver to enlist in Canadaβs military β Iβm almost 73, so Iβll have to be content with a desk job.
Let me know how much tax I owe, so I can set things right.
A lot of people seem to like this, probably all of them Canadians :-) but I have to comment that it wasnβt meant to be clickbait. Iβve been to Canada many times for business, to visit relatives, to be interviewed for a job, to visit IKEA for the first time ever, and to enjoy Expo67 (are there any subscribers who remember it?), to eat Montreal Smoked Meat for the first time in my life (if this were the only reason I love Canada, Dayenu β it would have been sufficient), saved by a truck driver when I ran off the road during a snow storm (on the Canadian side of the Adirondack Northway β P Q highway 15), for all the many Canadian musicians, actors, comedians and production companies, and I have to take a breath now. Not to mention Montreal, Quebec City, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto, and all the towns and villages along the way, notwithstanding the languages spoken there. And above all, Canadians.
This comment isnβt clickbait either. I just wanted to explain why I love Canada, for any of you who need an explanation.
Remember Charles DeGaulle and his βvive le Quebec libre?β I had to duck my head, shut my Anglophone mouth, and go back to Hackensack, NJ!
Nevertheless, it had no effect on my love for both Canada and Quebec, other than years later when I read a number of French books with a French-only dictionary (the only way to teach yourself a language, in my opinion).
It appears I touched a real nerve. I never received as many likes and replies since I joined Substack last year. Another great thing to love about Canada! Considering the latest news about the US government, I really need to start packing for a trip to the North. A one way trip. I need information and guidance on how to do it without a lot of pain.
I feel stupid for not plugging my own Substack, which is all about whatever I want to write. Itβs not for everyone. Some of the triggers are:
trans β I love trans women in particular, and support them in every way I can.
kindness β a colleague of mine thinks itβs political, or cult religion. Fuck that!
bad words β even the short ones. I reserve the right to use any word in the Oxford English Dictionary β the multiple volume second edition, not the one for ESL students. The big one has all the juicy words in it. I use all my words grammatically.
Canada β it comes up from time to time.
democracy β anyone can say anything except hurtful comments. I am the sole arbiter of the words readers use, and they get blocked immediately. You can disagree with me or any subscriber, but no ad hominem attacks.
I may have additional triggers when someone unsubscribes or gets abusive.
Itβs always free. No paywalls, except for manuscripts, completed books, review copies. None of this has been uploaded yet. I donβt even have a way to collect money.
Forgot to say the name. Doubly stupid. Itβs βStrange Soup β Edβs Wordsβ. Youβve been warned. Do not add comments here, unless youβre scooping me up and sending me and my wife to our dream house in Canada
This belongs in a readme post in my Substack, not here. I must delete most of it, and return to Canada, and my dream of living there. Iβll take care of it, tonight or tomorrow. Mea Culpa.
Born and raised in Montreal. that's me. Expo 67 was a big year. I only went once (crowds are not my thing) but my younger brother almost lived at Expo, he loved all the exhibits so much! Me, I missed all the amazing birdlife we used to watch at 5 a.m. on Ile Ste Helene. That's the island in the St. Lawrence River that was razed to build Expo67. So it goes...
If they didnβt at least leave something over for a wildlife reserve, Iβm rather disappointed. Hopefully, the Canadian government has changed its tune since 1967. The US is a fine example of what happens on the slippery slope of habitat destruction.
Logic? He donβt need no stinking logic!! The man makes it up as he goes along, always a whiny grievance baby. How you can be a perennial victim while telling everyone how tough you are is beyond me.
Thank you Dean. Everyday American tax paying citizens who voted for democracy for our future have to see, listen, and read about sideshow wet puddle pants vomit fiction π ππ€π‘π€¬π ππ€π‘π€¬π€¬π€¬π€¬
Way to go Canada! Keep becoming independent of our crazy leader TACO. Not worth the stress and guaranteed lies. Wish I was in a position to move there!
A measly 3% tax on these mega-companies that make a fortune in Canada. The estimated $2B they owe retroactively could go towards our big defence spend!
Most excellent article Dean, thanks for breaking down Trumps newest shitshow on Canada. I guess this is the part where tech giants are demanding their return of investment from their massive campaign donations into the Trump Presidency. This is outright extortion on Canada.
Love it. Go Canada. π¨π¦π¨π¦π¨π¦π¨π¦π¨π¦
Me too!
So glad to have Cool Carney in charge. Elbows up π¨π¦π¨π¦π¨π¦

Born in 1959 in Montreal. Lived through EXPO67 - what an amazing time

My family went from Scarborough, Ontario to Expo 67 twice!
See? An entire family understands how I feel!

Trump is, without a doubt, the most stupid man on the planet. And all the whinging. π€―. Itβs all elbows up as far as I am concerned.
Announcement: Trump is an idiot, certifiable senile, criminal, corrupt,β¦β¦..IDIOT. You heard it here first. π€¨
Can someone explain Trumps logic? Whining about a tariff that no one pays, a tax on Canadian use of Digital Services, so I am going to tax Americans.
I feel like looking for logic in his decisions is a surefire way to drive yourself crazy.
