There's nothing to say about "he who sits in the Oval Office." I pretend I am Canadian whenever I read the Blundell Substack and laugh my ass off. Unfortunately, I wake up and find I am still a Minnesotan. Thank you, Canada, you give me something to laugh about almost every day.
Minnesotans and Canadians are kindred spirits. As a proud Canadian, I don't mind you pretending to be one of us when reading Dean's substack. Feel free to pretend to be one if you ever travel to European countries as they like us Canucks. For many years, Americans pretended to be Canadian when they travelled overseas even donning Canada pins.
I wish I was at least a Minnesotan... I'm in SC. But I DO love Canada and have been to almost all parts, and some parts multiple times (Quebec, Victoria). Any chance you would recognize me as a pretend Canadian?
Oh, thank you, Deb!!! (I just remembered that I went to Minnesota Outward Bound 51 years ago, and loved it -- the lakes, I mean. MOBS, itself, was GRUELING!!)
WOW, I did Outward Bound too, and in that same time frame. I ended up with a love for the Boundary Waters. In the early ‘90’s my dog, Nikki and I, had many a long weekend trip canoeing up there. The good old days!
When I got into using a CB radio many years ago, I was over the moon when my first out of country CB radio transmission was with a couple from SC. I'd threatened to go for a visit, but unfortunately never made it. Life got in the way.
Since you chose our Canada to visit so frequently, you're practically one of us! :)
Hugs! ((( ))) Life has a way of doing that. As I read what you wrote about visiting Canada "so frequently", I suddenly remembered my first visit to Canada. My family lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan until I was 10 years old. One day, when I was perhaps 8 years old, my father said, "Kids, we're going to a different country today." He drove us to Windsor, Ontario and we were all thrilled! It's so wonderful to have that long-ago memory awoken. Thank you!
Awesome! I can totally relate! This happened to me on Bluesky when someone posted a picture of a tram on going up a narrow lane in Portugal and it had reminded me of when I`d traveled to Portugal for a month having rented a car & touring the off-the-beaten-track places eons ago. Like you, it was wonderful to have that long-ago memory awoken!
And Simon says, Trump threatening 35% tariffs on Canadian goods across the board
U.S. President Donald Trump posted a copy of the letter, addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, on his Truth Social account. It said the tariff will be enacted Aug. 1 and will be separate from sectoral taxes, like the one on copper. Any additional retaliatory tariffs that Canada places on the U.S. will incur an equivalent increase to the 35 per cent, Trump wrote.
"There will be no tariff if Canada, or companies within your country, decide to manufacture product within the United States," the letter read.
Trump said the tariffs will take effect on Aug. 1 and wrote that he will increase the levies if Canada retaliates.
While Carney said Canada would negotiate to the revised deadline date, he also added the country was "strengthening our trade partnerships throughout the world."
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said just Thursday morning that she was hopeful an agreement could be reached by the July 21 deadline.
"No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are his accomplices." ‘A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves.’”
“…no tariff if Canada, or companies within your country, decide to manufacture product within the United States”
That should work well for oil, lumber and potash. Doesn’t Trump know that most of our exports are raw materials, not manufactured goods? He’s so stupid.
It truly is all smoke and mirrors. Distract from the Epstein mess and manipulate the stock markets. Disgustingly amoral as only sociopaths can be. IMHO. I hope we find our big boy and girl shoes asap and take off the sheep disguises.
They've become a joke. Like telling my then teenage son that he was grounded as he walked out the door with my car keys laughing his head off (single parenting sux). Heard the tariff threat so many times, like who cares...really?!
I think you should explain the dairy tariffs! IIRC, the tiny Canadian dairy industry is being protected from dumping by the enormous USA dairy industry, as well as overproduction leading to loss of small enterprises. This is still hotly debated among politicians in Canada.
.
"Canada's supply management, abbreviated SM, is a national agricultural policy framework used across the country, which controls the supply of dairy, poultry and eggs through production and import mechanisms to ensure that prices for supply-managed farmers are both stable and predictable. The supply management system was authorized by the 1972 Farm Products Agencies Act, which established the two national agencies that oversee the system. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy_and_poultry_supply_management_in_Canada
"...When the U.S. under the Trump administration withdrew from TPP on January 24, 2017, the tariff-rate quotas (TRQ) on dairy products remained in effect. No U.S. exports ever pay the 200 to over 300% TRQs because US dairy products are never imported to Canada outside the TRQ."
Thanks Sandra. Only once or twice have I heard American media provide the facts behind the dairy products & correct the falsehood about the tariffs & that they're applied only after agreed-to quota has been surpassed. Meanwhile, TACO47 spews these lies ad nauseum.
The Wikipedia article is VERY LONG and most of the media reporters are too lazy to read the whole thing. I must have read the one who actually mentioned it, years ago. I read it to the bottom but must have skipped some of it. The footnotes are also worth looking at.
TACO47 lies about everything, so why not this? Actually, if there are numbers, Stephen Miller has written every word of every lie.
True enough. All they'd need to do though, is make a one sentence statement saying that tariff only applies after quota has been surpassed and that it's never had to be applied in the time it's been in effect.
Don’t forget that big companies in the US insist that softwood lumber be excluded from any free trade agreement. Might be stumpage rates. My brother in law explained it to me once.
The US is definitely protectionist. The one that comes to mind is sugar. As you probably know, we don't grow much sugar cane, but we do grow sugar beets. The tariff on imported cane sugar is substantial. The pattern is similar to the one Canada has for milk.
"The United States imports sugar under a system of tariff-rate quotas (TRQ). A TRQ is a two-tiered tariff for which the tariff rate charged depends on the volume of imports. A low-tier (in-quota) tariff is charged on imports within the quota volume. A high-tier (over-quota) tariff is charged on imports in excess of the quota volume. Almost all raw cane sugar, refined sugars and sugar syrups, and sugar-containing products are imported under TRQs for those products."
Trump and company never miss an opportunity to grift. Thanks for the details of how the market is now cooperating with notice ahead of time. Glad Canada is ignoring this and moving ahead with their interests.
TACO47 has announced to the press that, after receiving his letter, Canada called and that they took it well; as if anybody would believe that our PM is so worried about the DonOld's threats that he'd be right on the horn calling him to plead with him not to punish Canada this way.
Finally the house of cards is crumbling. The "Trump Crumble" it could be dubbed.
I say this regarding the disclosure of market manipulation in this article, obviouusly orchestrated by "Mr. Crumble" himself. I have been saying this from the start, Mr. Crumb-ball is a blatant outlaw, ripping of the world for money. Follow the money and believe me, even his political base cannot justify their president initiating this level of criminal activity.
And I love the fixed photo of Mr. Carney holding a full hand of cards, and Mr. Crumble showing none.
Mr. Crumble may either escape to Russia or Israel, but my guess would be Russia. It is unlikely that the United Arab Emerites would take him in !
These maga people will fracture as you have reported. When presented with facts over and over again, they will eventually run out of people to blame, insert Joe Biden, anyone but Donald Trump, but now that they are fighting amongst themselves, the buck stops at Trump, his Mega cult is going to eat each other alive, but facts don’t lie, that is our upper hand, they will, and are realizing the exact person they worship is the exact person that duped them this whole time for his own enrichment. This administration couldn’t run a lemonade stand. Thank you Dean for continuing to dig and report facts. They have lied so much, they can’t remember half of them, and if we spread the word to our Trumper relatives, friends, anyone MAGA, it will take a hard beat down of facts, but eventually the whole metaverse will fold like a house of cards. Thank you Dean, Lev, Zev, Michael, Malcom, and Aaron, Steve Schmit and so many others for speaking truth to us and presenting us with your insights and hard work so we can confidently argue or pushback on our MAGA cult friends that have been brainwashed into lunacy and coach them back to reality to make sure only sensible and serious people run our government and make decisions for us that actually help our lives and those we love, not hurt us, our families, communities and country. We are Americans, Donald Trumps lies are finally catching up to him and he is running out of hiding places or others to blame. Keep it up. And Thank you. Your non stop investigating and reporting brings me hope that we will have a bright future. Dean, seeing you genuinely laugh was the best part of my day. Thanks! 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇺🇸
I'm soooooooo glad that Canada is committed to stem the flow of the Scourge Fentanyl into the US. Eliminating that massive amount (checks notes, can't find anything) uhhhhhh, One Pound of Fentanyl will save countless lives while we bolster our own economy by exporting tons (or "tonnes" in Canadian) of Vitamin F north to Canada...

I love SC, and it’s killing me not to get there again till this Maga nightmare ends! Stay beautiful! 🇺🇸❤️🇨🇦
At the rate “he” is exhibiting dementia maybe things will improve rather than degenerate!
Thanks for your sweet words, Susan. Are you in Canada?
Yes, I am in Ontario. And have travelled a lot around both our countries too.
I'm delighted Susan! I'm also from Ontario, Ottawa to be precise. Where do you call home?
You’re always welcome up here
There are so many of us I do believe you would be welcomed with open arms 🤗
Oh, thank you, Deb!!! (I just remembered that I went to Minnesota Outward Bound 51 years ago, and loved it -- the lakes, I mean. MOBS, itself, was GRUELING!!)

Windsor is only about 425 miles south of Ottawa!
You sound like an adventurer! I was, too, once upon a time, long ago. Did you go to Portugal alone?
Agreed
me too

Elliott. Absolutely love the quote at the end of your comment.
35%? (Yawn) OK. Wonder what I should have for lunch.
I'd venture to say that there's more cocaine going up Jr's nose than the total amount of fentanyl crossing the Cdn border into the US.
I dare say you be right!
Trump's tariff threats have become hollow, just like his head!
They've become a joke. Like telling my then teenage son that he was grounded as he walked out the door with my car keys laughing his head off (single parenting sux). Heard the tariff threat so many times, like who cares...really?!

The footnotes include statements like this one:
The highest tariff Bond cited, 300% TRQ on butter, is actually never applied as Canada does not import butter above the TRQ threshold."
There are NUMBERS in this stuff, therefore most Americans are avoiding them.
Too true! And they wonder why the education system is failing!
Don’t forget that big companies in the US insist that softwood lumber be excluded from any free trade agreement. Might be stumpage rates. My brother in law explained it to me once.

Trump never mentions this of course. Thanks for the info.
Agriculture is often protected in many countries. It’s not completely unreasonable to want to retain capacity for home grown production.
But Trump seizes on dairy in Canada without a second thought.
I’m so jealous that Canada has adults in charge. And we have a four old and his minions.
Trump and company never miss an opportunity to grift. Thanks for the details of how the market is now cooperating with notice ahead of time. Glad Canada is ignoring this and moving ahead with their interests.
Excellent article on articulating all the lies and pointing out this insider trading knowing beforehand
It’s all nothing but pathological lies setting up a scenario to just do whatever the hell they want

Who wouldda thunk that our most reliable source on US politics would be a Canadian?
Sorry, neighbor.
No worries, Richard! Same shite, different day.
Load up all the aluminum into as many frigging ships that it takes and send it to Europe ( market price - no tariffs)
Made in Canada with zero greenhouse gas emissions because we cook it up with clean hydro power.
